Better Board Practices

What is the role of boards in different seasons of an organisation's life? What are the necessary attributes of board directors and Chairs in particular? And collectively, how do boards enhance the organisation's capacity to execute its strategy?

Most board members of social purpose organisations feel good about their contributions and believe that board meetings, on the whole, go well. But do boards actually add value? The unfortunate reality is that most boards, once you take into account the effort management expends managing the board and its meetings, offer at best a neutral net value.

It was this perplexing reality associated with boards on which I served that led me to design, (along with Paul Steele and Bill Mithen) a fresh and essentialist approach to board design and practice. The Better Boards Practices have now been implemented, at least in part, with enough boards to be confident that it is a better way. Chris Gray has also added some important insight into the model.

This Program is for Chairs and CEO's (or other board members under some circumstances) who are curious about answers to the above questions, and who are interested in exploring an innovative approach to board practice that has the following features:

  • simplified agendas to focus on key governance and strategic matters

  • clear distinctions in practice between the two board functions of governance and advice

  • integration of external intelligence and wisdom into board deliberations to enhance that of board members
